San Antonio Wedding Photographer: Dawn Elizabeth Studios

Hello friends! Today on the blog I am sharing a wedding vendor that is very near and dear to my heart. Dawn Richardson, owner of Dawn Elizabeth Studios, was my wedding photographer. I hired Dawn about a year and a half before my wedding and over that time she became a dear friend of mine.

A little background

Before Dawn was a San Antonio Wedding Photographer she was a software engineer at USAA. A friend at work sent her the link to a camera for $500 and said “hey, we should learn how to take pictures for our events.” Having a tech background, she immediately fell in love with the technical side of photography.

She began shooting everything she could from taking pictures of her dog all the way to shooting her mom’s wedding reception. Along the way, she met a husband and wife team that invited her to be a wedding day assistant. She continued to learn about lighting and how to shoot in different settings.

After becoming involved in the Rising Tide Society she was inspired and encouraged by other creative business owners. She quickly became obsessed with the idea of owning her own business. Over two years, she worked about 20 weddings and in June 2017, she pursued her business full time where she now shoots about 30 weddings a year.

Finding the love for weddings

In the beginning of her journey, Dawn shot everything she could to gain experience. At first, she thought she wanted to pursue Family Photography. After assisting a few weddings, she knew that’s where she wanted to be. “I love all of the moving pieces on a wedding day, its a high energy and I love it! You are a part of someones most important day.”

A typical work day at Dawn Elizabeth Studios

Dawn is a new mommy as of May so the recent months have been all about adjusting to mommy life and balancing work with personal life. In the beginning days of the week she typically works from home, recovering from weddings. This consists of computer work, communicating with clients and other vendors, editing photos, prepping for upcoming weddings, planning marketing and blog posts. Thursday through Sunday she calls “pants days” she is out and about meeting with clients and shooting sessions whether it be engagement, bridals or wedding days!

Advice for couples who are wedding planning

Dawn stresses to “trust your vendors.” It’s so important to trust that your vendor team are professionals for a reason so if they suggest something its because they know how it will benefit you. She also reminds couples that its your day, do what you want even when its not the norm. If you don’t want to do a bouquet toss, you don’t have to! Do what’s important to you and your fiancé. I couldn’t agree more with Dawn on this note!

Why she loves working with brides

They are always excited and ready to have an awesome time! She says her brides are full of joy and her favorite part is how you become friends along the way.

Whats the number one question brides should ask before hiring a photographer?

Dawn immediately referred to protecting your photos. When interviewing a potential wedding photographer you want to know how your photos will be stored from wedding day to delivery time. Coming from a tech background, Dawn is very passionate about this topic “they should have some sort of back-up system in place in the event of a natural disaster or fire.” You can read more about how Dawn stores her client images from her blog post “How to Back Up Your Images Like A Boss.”

Other passions

Aside from being a San Antonio Wedding Photographer, wife and new mom. Dawn is passionate about education. If she wasn’t a wedding photographer she would utilize her degree in business and pursue business coaching. This is an area that she has already dived into by offering one-on-one mentoring sessions.

What is a fun fact that most people don’t know about Dawn?

She grew up in a competitive dance studio for 13 years. She spent most of her childhood training to be a professional ballet dancer. Dawn adds “hence why I like to dance at weddings.”
